I fear I may have jumped the gun somewhat earlier, as the expression goes. Well, I definitly jumped the gun and had a little bit of ranting, and for that I apologize.
Following a talk with a vulpine enthusiast I know, he pointed out that foxes can indeed be kept as companions, but it would require plenty of space, time, and attention, which a lot of people don't have.
But you do really seem to know your stuff, so I'm sorry for the miniature outburst. Tod really is pretty fox, and he's lucky to have someone who knows what they are doing.
Granted, foxes aren't for everyone. That's the main reason people get worked up about "wild" animals. It's simply because their behaviors differ and some people don't want to put up with it. Like the link points out, the problem is the definition of "pet." Foxes are more like companions or rowdy 2 year olds. The fact that they can live on their own (although unfortunately have less than a 1 year life span in the wild) does not mean they are not capable of living with a human companion. Horses, ferrets, hedgehogs, rats, etc.. (even cats are wild since they can live on their own and dogs have gone wild in Australia and other places too). Are all considered "wild" but can live in a "domestic" life style easily, depending on the owner.
You have to know a lot about foxes, their behaviors, and what they need to keep them happy. So no, I don't recommend foxes as pets for everyone, but foxes as pets is a LOT more common than you think. Especially Fennecs (in Japan, those are *extremely* popular). They are the most popular among the fox breeds too and I see nothing wrong with them getting the luxury of that of a cat or dog. So long as they are happy, that's all that matters, no matter what anyone says.
Most states require you to have a "pet permit" (a one dollar permit) to keep a fox just to make sure you know about them. Others require different permits, and very few states do not allow certain wild animals at all. But that goes the same with Pit Bulls.
It all depends on the owners and a fan-based link like that of opinion does not apply to everyone. You'd really have to *research* the animal yourself to understand and experience the love and joy of having one like so many have had the fortune of doing themselves.
The problem, again, with animals capable of living on their own is that their personalities are different than what people want out of a pet, they require more attention and space to run. Thus the reason why we *created* the dog breeds you see today to encourage only the behaviors most people want.
Why can't everyone consider and remember that foxes should NOT be kept as pets! Anyone vaguelly considering it should really look here and find out how much of a bad idea it really is.
Foxes are wild, and they really shouldn't even be attempted to be made pets. In most cases, doing so is illegal, and rightly so.
